School Ties slide

Burnham Grammar School offers students a variety of roles and responsibilities that they can undertake during their academic journey. The Faculty and Senior Tie system both provides recognition and responsibilities for those students in Key stage 4 that are both responsible learners who Embrace Challenge.

Senior ties are awarded to students at the end of year 10 and in Year 11 who have demonstrated responsibility in their learning approach, behaviour, and attendance. These students play an active role in the wider school community and support other students both inside and outside the classroom.

Students in year 10 and 11 can apply for subject ties, which involve contributing to various academic subjects within the school. The selection process involves a written application and demonstrating a strong interest in and commitment to school life. The generic job description provides an outline of this role and its recognition.

Students in years 10 & 11 are awarded Arts ties in recognition for any outstanding contribution to creativity in school during their time at the school.

  • Outstanding performances in Art, Design & Technology, Drama or Music
  • Outstanding improvement in performances
  • High levels of attendance at extra-curricular sessions
  • Outstanding levels of effort in lessons
  • Have entered creative competitions within school regularly
  • Assisted any department in the creative faculty with lunchtime, after school clubs or primary liaison days
  • Outstanding performance in creativity outside the school curriculum

Students in years 10 and 11 are awarded sports ties in recognition for any outstanding contribution to school sport during their time at the school. 

The criteria are as follows:

  • Outstanding performances for a school team
  • Outstanding improvement in performance
  • High levels of attendance at extra-curricular training sessions
  • Outstanding levels of effort in lessons and for school teams
  • Have refereed or umpired for school and interform matches
  • Assisted the PE department as a Sports Leader with lunchtime, after school clubs or primary liaison days
  • Outstanding performance in sport outside the school curriculum
